Sciatica:
This is the most important cause of this pain. The pain occurs when there is pressure on the sciatic nerve, which starts at the lower back and runs down the leg.
Symptoms: Pain that starts behind the hip and feels like an electric shock traveling down the back of the thigh (to the foot).
Lumbar Disc Prolapse/Herniated Disc:
This pain occurs when the disc between the vertebrae in the spine pushes out and presses on the nerves. Activities such as bending over and lifting weights increase its intensity.
Lumbar Spondylosis:
As we age, the distance between the vertebrae decreases and pressure is placed on the nerves.
Spinal Canal Stenosis:
This is a condition in which the nerve tunnel in the spine narrows. This can cause pain and numbness in the legs when walking for long periods of time.
Muscle weakness and tightness (Piriformis Syndrome):
When the piriformis muscle at the back of the hip tightens and presses on the nerve, the same pain is felt.
