Main causes of thyroid problems

Autoimmune diseases: This is the biggest cause of thyroid problems. This is a condition where the body mistakenly attacks its own thyroid gland as an infection.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: This causes hypothyroidism.

Graves’ disease: This causes hyperthyroidism.

Iodine deficiency: The body needs iodine to produce thyroid hormone. Low iodine levels in the diet can cause goiter and dysfunction.

Genetics: If your parents or siblings have thyroid problems in your family, you are more likely to have them.

Hormonal changes: In women, major changes in hormones during pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause can lead to thyroid problems.

Medications: Certain medications (such as some medications for mental health and heart disease) can affect thyroid function.

Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy for head or neck cancer can negatively affect thyroid function.
