Reasons for Thyroid Problems

Autoimmune Disorders: A condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own thyroid gland.
Hashimoto’s: Causes decreased hormone production.

Graves’ Disease: Causes excessive hormone production.
Iodine Deficiency: Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormone. A decrease in iodine in the body affects the function of the gland.
Genetics: If close relatives in the family have thyroid problems, you are more likely to develop them.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes in women (pregnancy, menopause) can affect thyroid function.

Medications: Medications used for some other diseases can interfere with thyroid function.
Radiation Treatment: People who have had radiation treatment for other diseases in the head or neck may develop thyroid problems.
