Thyroid Nodules: When Should You Be Afraid? Symptoms and Things to Look Out For

If you find thyroid nodules, you should not self-medicate or panic. Most nodules are caused by hormonal changes or normal swelling. However, if you find nodules that are growing rapidly or painless, you should see an endocrinologist as soon as possible and get your tests done. With timely diagnosis and treatment, thyroid problems can be completely controlled.

Nodules form when cells in the thyroid gland grow abnormally. Most of these (about 90%) are non-cancerous (benign). However, it is important to be aware of them.

Main Symptoms: Thyroid nodules often do not cause symptoms. However, as the tumor grows in size, the following may occur:

Swelling in the neck: A lump or mass may appear in the front of the neck.

Difficulty swallowing: When the tumor presses on the windpipe or esophagus, it may cause difficulty swallowing.

Voice changes: Chronic hoarseness or a change in voice.

Difficulty breathing: In severe cases, shortness of breath may occur.
