Causes of thyroid problems
Autoimmune diseases:
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: The body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland and slows down its function (Hypothyroidism).
\
Graves’ disease: The immune system causes the thyroid gland to overwork (Hyperthyroidism).
Iodine deficiency: When the amount of iodine in the body decreases, the thyroid gland cannot produce hormones and the gland swells (Goiter).
Genetic factors: If your parents or close relatives have thyroid problems in your family, you are more likely to have them.
Hormonal changes: Thyroid problems are common in women due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause.
Side effects of medications: Some medications (for example, medications for certain types of mental illness) can affect the function of the thyroid gland.
Other diseases or tumors: Nodules or infections in the thyroid gland can affect the function of the gland.
