Alcoholism:
Long-term heavy drinking damages liver cells and causes inflammation (Alcoholic Hepatitis). This later causes scarring of the liver (Cirrhosis) and liver failure.
Viral Infections:
Viral Hepatitis:
Viral Hepatitis A, B, and C viruses infect the liver and damage liver function. Of these, B and C viruses cause chronic liver disease.
Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD):
This is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver, even in non-alcoholics. It is commonly seen in people with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and blood cholesterol.
Obesity and Lifestyle:
A diet high in fat and sugar and lack of exercise affect liver function.
Overuse of medications:
Excessive use of painkillers and other chemicals without a doctor’s prescription can lead to toxic buildup in the liver.
Autoimmune & Genetic Diseases:
The body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the liver (Autoimmune Hepatitis) or certain genetic diseases can affect the liver.
