5 main reasons behind ingrown toenails

Incorrect nail trimming: Cutting the nail too much so that it grows sideways (Curved trimming) is the main cause of ingrown toenails. The nail should always be cut straight across. When the sides are cut too much, the nail starts to penetrate the skin as it grows.

Tight footwear: Regularly wearing tight sandals or shoes that put excessive pressure on the toes can cause the nail to grow into the flesh.

Nail injuries: When heavy objects fall on the toes or the toes are injured, the direction of nail growth can change, leading to ingrown toenails.

Genetic factors: Some people have naturally curved or thick nails. These people are more likely to develop ingrown toenails than others.

Poor hygiene and infection: Dirt under the nails, feet that are always wet (excessive sweating), and fungal infections all weaken the nails and cause ingrown nails.

Things to do to cure ingrown nails and reduce pain:
Soak in warm water: Soak your feet in warm water with a little salt or turmeric powder for 15 minutes 2-3 times a day. This will help reduce pain and prevent infection.

Proper nail care: When cutting your nails, be careful not to cut too much on the sides and cut straight across. You can try to lift the nail slightly from the skin with cotton on the ingrown nail area (only with great care).

Soft shoes: Avoid tight shoes and wear loose shoes (open-toe sandals) until the pain goes away.

In case of infection: If you feel severe redness, pus, or fever around the nail, it is a sign of infection. So, instead of self-treating, it is best to see a doctor and get antibiotic creams or minor surgery if necessary.
