(loose or tighten) over time is mainly due to climatic changes and the physical properties of the wood. The main reasons behind this are as follows:
1. Moisture Absorption/Expansion
Wood is a hygroscopic material. That is, wood can absorb and release moisture from the atmosphere.
During the rainy season: When the humidity in the atmosphere is high, the wood absorbs that moisture and swells. This is the reason why the doors become tight and difficult to close.
During the summer: When the sun rises, the moisture in the wood dries out and it shrinks (Shrinkage). Then there is a gap between the doors and it does not lock properly.
2. Wood Quality
If the wood used to build the door is not well-dried (not seasoned wood), it will change its shape over time. This natural change that occurs when the wood dries can cause the door to be out of alignment.
3. Loose Hinges
Hinges that support the weight of the door tend to loosen over the years. When the hinges are loose, the door sags and rubs against the frame. This causes the door to not close properly.
4. Minor changes in the structure of the house
Slight cracks or settlements in the foundation or walls of the house can affect the door and window frames. If the frame is slightly tilted, the door will not fit into it.
Ways to fix this:
Sanding/Planing the pressing area: Cut away some wood or sandpaper on the area where the door rubs. But this should be done taking into account the natural change of the wood.
Tighten the hinges: If the screws are loose, tighten them. Use new screws if necessary.
Polish or Paint: It is a good idea to apply a good quality polish or paint to prevent the wood from absorbing moisture. This will protect the wood from moisture.
Seasoning: When buying new doors, make sure they are made of well-seasoned wood.
