Causes of varicose veins
Weakened Valves: When the valves in the veins become weak, blood flows back down and the pressure in the veins increases and swells.
Age: It is common for the elasticity of the veins to decrease and the valves to weaken as we age.
Standing or sitting for long periods of time: People who stand or sit for long periods of time due to work have reduced blood flow in the legs and increased pressure in the veins.
Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the increased blood volume in the body and the pressure of the uterus on the veins can cause varicose veins.
Genetic factors: If someone in your family (mother or father) has this problem, you are also more likely to develop it.
Obesity: Being overweight puts excessive pressure on the veins in the legs.
Gender: This condition is more common in women than men. Hormonal changes are a major cause.
