Main causes of back pain and swelling

Disc problems (Slip Disc/Herniated Disc): When the discs between the vertebrae in the spine slip or rupture, pressure is placed on the nearby nerves, causing pain and swelling.

Muscle Strain: Lifting heavy weights, sitting or walking incorrectly, and sudden movements can cause muscle strain and swelling.

Arthritis/Spondylitis: Arthritis that affects the joints of the spine (e.g. Ankylosing Spondylitis) causes chronic pain and swelling in the spine.

Nerve compression (Sciatica): When there is pressure on the large nerve that runs from the spine to the legs (Sciatic nerve), pain and swelling can be felt from the middle to the legs.

Infection: Bacterial or tuberculosis infections of the spine can cause swelling. This is a serious condition.

Osteoporosis: Small fractures in the spine due to decreased bone strength can cause pain.

Lifestyle: Sitting in front of a computer for long periods of time and lack of exercise can affect the health of the spine.
