Main factors that cause cancer
Genetic Mutations:
The basic cause of cancer is changes or mutations in the DNA structure that controls the growth of our cells. This can sometimes be inherited from our parents, or it can be due to changes that occur during life.
Smoking and drinking:
Chemicals in tobacco are a major cause of lung cancer and cancer of the mouth and throat. Excessive alcohol consumption leads to many diseases, including liver cancer.
Diet:
Processed foods, excessively fried and grilled foods, and excessive consumption of red meat increase the risk of cancer.
Infections:
Some viruses can cause cancer. For example:
HPV virus: Causes cervical cancer.
Hepatitis B and C: Can cause liver cancer.
H. pylori bacteria: Linked to stomach cancer.
Radiation & Chemicals:
Excessive exposure to X-rays, ultraviolet rays (sunlight), as well as long-term exposure to certain chemicals used for industrial purposes (e.g. asbestos, benzene) can increase the risk of cancer.
Lifestyle:
Lack of exercise, obesity, and excessive use of hormone-related drugs can also cause cancer.
